Zinfandel is grown widely in the United States, where it commonly makes huge red wines of great power and structure. It is also known as Primitivo, and in its Italian incarnation is (mostly) a little lighter and more savoury. It has only recently been planted in Australia, with the most successful regions being the McLaren Vale and Margaret River. In warmer regions like the Vale, it makes a bigger wine, with black fruits predominant. In the cooler regions, such as Margaret River, it is more often seen with red fruits and subtle spices. Our Full Fare Zinfandel falls into this latter category: it is a very pretty ruby with pink tints, and has a fascinating nose showing cinnamon and anise notes, redcurrant and a hint of a floral character, violets perhaps? It is mouthfilling with a dusty tannin, tastes of raspberry pastilles and finishes long, with oodles of white pepper. A very moreish wine.
